Sun Valley's Boulder Mountains dominate the skyline as one enters the southerly boundaries of the city of Ketchum.  With elevations nearing the 12,000 foot mark, and countless hundreds of points topping 10,000 feet, the Boulders, like their Pioneer Mountain counterpart, are an extraordinarily rugged and beautiful range.  However, unlike their Pioneer Mountain counterpart, few trails, and even fewer roads access their formidable presence.  The range stretches north from Ketchum for more than 50 miles to the town of Challis, and are a part of the largest remaining unclassified road-less area left in the United States.  Because of these isolated and pristine qualities, they are a part of a congressionally mandated Wilderness Study area that will include more that 450,000 acres.  Recreational opportunities are limited because of their trail-less and isolated demeanor, however climbing, hiking, ski-mountaineering, mountain biking and alpine fly-fishing opportunities are present to those with adventurous soles.  The Boulder's truly are beautiful mountains.

Smoke from forest fires burning nearly 200 miles to the north  color the sky above the Boulder Mountains.
