Idaho's Pioneer Mountains are as beautiful and scenic as a mountain range can get. On average the states highest range; the Pioneer's also offer some of its most scenic locations. With hundreds of pristine mountain lakes and ponds, and hundreds of pinnacles topping the 10,000.00-foot mark, outdoor recreational opportunities are abundant. Often mistaken as the Sawtooth Mountains due to their proximity to Sun Valley's Mount Baldy and their serrated domineer. Fair to good trail systems exist, however the majority of the range lies off the beaten path. The range trends from the town of Arco on its southern extremities to Trail Creek Summit on its north. The towns of Sun Valley and Mackey safeguard its western and eastern parameters. The Range is roughly 50 square miles in circumference and abounds in both history and mystique. Tremendous precipitous walls of rock, sometimes over 3,000.00 vertical feet tall, are commonly viewed from deeply carved glacial valleys. Such beauty has not gone unnoticed and as a result, nearly 105,000 acres has been designated for inclusion as wilderness. Two of Idaho's 12,000.00-foot summits survive here also.
